performance TBD

Sylvia is a solo performance by Maya Hodges, in loving memory of the late Sylvia M. Robinson. In a series of vignettes and “lessons,” Maya communicates with Sylvia and seeks guidance on love, life, and loss. Maya embodies the spirit of both Sylvia and herself in this examination of two black women.

Fractal Theatre Collective is proud to produce a play that will honor and celebrate Sylvia’s life and legacy.

Sylvia M. Robinson was a remarkable woman and stalwart supporter of community and the arts in DC. Born and raised in Washington, DC, she spent the majority of her life dedicated to the cultivation of the lower Georgia Ave community. After enjoying a comfortable life working in computer science in Maryland for many years, at 39 she returned to DC to pursue her dream of building a community space for arts and social services. She purchased an old abandoned building on Euclid Street, which was originally built as a home for the National Association for the Relief of Destitute Colored Women and Children (founded 1863). Upon this incredible history, she founded and developed the Emergence Community Arts Collective.

Today the Emergence Community Arts Collective operates as a center of life and community in the Pleasant Plains community. Sylvia said it best herself:

“ECAC is a model for a true community center - not one imposed on a community, but one built by the community.  Our activities are designed to rebuild social networks, empower people and organize around a common vision. ‘Discover’ the treasure that has always been here serving the community since 1927.”
